Hysterectomy
A hysterectomy is the removal uterus
A sub-total hysterectomy is the removal of the uterus
A total hysterectomy is the removal of the uterus AND cervix
A radical hysterectomy is the removal of the uterus AND cervix AND part or all of the vagina
An oophrectomy is the removal of ONE or BOTH ovaries that is in ADDITION to the (type) of hysterectomy.
A hysterectomy is dangerous, very damaging and trumatic operation that carries a high death rate! Consequently when the ovaries are left in the body there is NO guarentee that they will continue to work. Some continue to work, others stop quickly afterwards, early menopause is almost inevitable. NO doctor can tell you how long your ovaries will last even when left in the body.
A post pregnancy hysterectomy is when a hysterectomy (of any type) is the outcome of a pregnancy, birth, caesarean, miscarriage, termination.
A post pregnancy hysterectomy may be referred to as a caesarean hysterectomy, obstetric hysterectomy or emergency hysterectomy.
A planned hysterectomy or elective hysterectomy is when the person enters the hospital for the planned surgery for example for confirmed cancer and IS NOT pregnant.
Many years ago a post pregnancy hysterectomy WAS very rare, consultants would only come across ONE in a career. Now there is little worry, concern, or preventative measures to hospitals giving TEN or more new mums this operation in one year! This attitude is NOT acceptable.
The attitudes by some doctors are that it does not matter that I have just taken your uterus or more because you can do surrogacy. This attitude is NOT acceptable.
The attitude by some health visitors (in the UK), and midwives, is that it does not matter that your reproductive organ(s) have been taken, because you can adopt or be a child minder. Many are also told to think about how much they will save on sanitary products. This attitude is NOT acceptable.
